FDA prioritises AI and surgical robotics guidance for 2027

MedTech Dive reports that the FDA has placed artificial intelligence and robotically assisted surgical devices among its guidance priorities for the 2027 fiscal year. The agency plans to finalise recommendations covering marketing submissions and lifecycle management for AI-enabled devices, alongside guidance on premarket submissions for surgical robots. It also intends to develop draft recommendations on the evidence needed for generative AI-enabled conversational devices for mental disorders.

For businesses developing these technologies, the priorities offer an indication of where further regulatory clarity may emerge. Guidance on testing, clinical evidence and managing software throughout its lifecycle could help teams plan development and submission activities more effectively. These are planned publications rather than newly finalised requirements, but they highlight the importance of aligning technical development, clinical validation and regulatory strategy as increasingly complex devices move towards market.
