Pioneering medical 3D printing lab opens in Sheffield
Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has unveiled a state-of-the-art medical 3D printing laboratory that will produce highly realistic, patient-specific anatomical models to support surgical planning, simulation and clinical training. Equipped with advanced digital anatomy printers capable of replicating the look and feel of human bone and soft tissue, the new facility allows surgeons to rehearse complex procedures before entering the operating theatre.
Funded through a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) infrastructure grant, the laboratory represents another significant step forward for personalised healthcare and the adoption of additive manufacturing within the NHS. By enabling clinicians to better visualise complex anatomies, improve surgical precision and enhance training opportunities, innovations such as this have the potential to improve patient outcomes whilst reducing operating times and supporting the next generation of surgeons.
