NICE launches National HealthTech Access Programme to accelerate NHS innovation
Medical Device Network reports that the UK has launched a new National HealthTech Access Programme designed to improve how innovative medical technologies are adopted across the NHS. The initiative aims to tackle a long standing challenge where promising health technologies reach patients slowly or are only available in certain parts of the country.
The programme expands NICE’s technology appraisal process to include medical devices, diagnostics and digital health tools. Under the new framework, a small number of high impact technologies that demonstrate clinical and cost effectiveness will be reimbursed and rolled out across the NHS in a similar way to medicines. Early areas of focus include capsule sponge tests for detecting oesophageal cancer and AI tools designed to support the diagnosis of prostate and breast cancer.
