NHS trials 15-minute blood test to speed up diagnosis in children
Med-Tech Insights reports that NHS England has launched a pilot of a rapid 15-minute blood test developed by MeMed BV, designed to help clinicians distinguish between bacterial and viral infections in children. The trial, supported by the SBRI Healthcare programme, is taking place at Alder Hey Children’s NHS Foundation Trust, St Mary’s Hospital in London, and Great North Children’s Hospital.
The test provides near-immediate results, allowing faster diagnosis and treatment for serious conditions such as sepsis or meningitis, while reducing unnecessary antibiotic prescriptions. Early feedback from clinicians suggests the test could make a significant difference in emergency paediatric care and improve patient flow during busy periods.
