New breakthrough in preventing chemotherapy-induced hair loss
UK Healthcare Pavilion reports a promising breakthrough from Sheffield Hallam University, where researchers have discovered that combining scalp cooling with antioxidants may significantly reduce chemotherapy-induced hair loss.
The study found that while cooling the scalp to an optimal temperature of 18°C offers the best protection against follicle damage, the addition of antioxidants such as N-Acetylcysteine or resveratrol can enhance effectiveness even when the cooling temperature is suboptimal. This could make scalp cooling more accessible and reliable for cancer patients across various clinical settings.
Led by Dr Nik Georgopoulos and carried out in partnership with Paxman Scalp Cooling, the findings mark a major step forward in supportive cancer care. As hair loss continues to be one of the most distressing side effects of chemotherapy, this research highlights the growing role of MedTech in improving patient quality of life.
